Gem City Ballet

Gem City Ballet was formed by Barbara Pontecorvo in 1992 shortly after she retired from a twenty-year performing career, including nearly ten years as ballerina at the Dayton Ballet under Stuart Sebastian. GCB grew to become the only local pre-professional company to perform regularly at the Victoria Theatre in Dayton and to perform the works of American master choreographer George Balanchine. In addition to its own performance season, GCB performs regularly with the Dayton Philharmonic, Miami Valley Symphony Orchestra, and the Dayton Opera, and has performed in collaboration with the Bach Society of Dayton, the Air Force Band and Sorg Opera.

Originally known as Ballet de Jeunesse, there were eight women and one man present at the first rehearsal. Dancers are admitted by audition only, and auditions are open to all serious dance students in the Miami Valley area. GCB has produced twenty professional dancers in its short history. GCB performed its first Balanchine ballet, Concerto Barocco, in 2003 at the Victoria Theatre in Dayton.
